Do we deserve to have things given to us?
|
“For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ’s.”
|
|
“Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD: They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof. Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.”

What has happened to civility in humanity? Could it be as a result of people rejecting Christianity? This perplexing query resonates with many, yet is seems as if nothing will stem the tide.
With the explosion of social media has come some unsettling characteristics. Smart phones with cameras proliferate society, and content for millions is one quick click away. As people stroll down city streets with phones in hand, immortalization is quickly shared to Twitter/X, Facebook, Instagram, etc.
There is no context with these posts, only raw emotion being shared around the world. Although someone could quite possibly be dealing with tremendously burdensome issues at work, at home, with family members, just drop your humanity for an instant and you will quickly become fodder for the masses.
Father Women Know Best
However, there is another completely separate class of self-centered individuals who have taken it upon themselves to berate anyone who dares to cross them. The moniker that has been bestowed upon them is “Karen.”
For all of you lovely Christian ladies who bare this burden, please accept my humble apologies. I cannot imagine the smirks, guffaws, or pointed looks you get when a stranger hears your name. Who knows, they may grab their cellphone on the off-chance you might go berserk (just kidding).
According to some, this unflattering label derived from a comedy special that aired in 2005. Others attribute it to a line in the movie, Mean Girls, from 2004. Whatever the case may be, this tagline has stuck.

Long-suffering under the patriarchal system has stymied a desire to fix society, and it cannot be kept under lock and key anymore. As such, the outlandish behavior of these self-absorbed, entitled women is disturbing in polite society.

I Am Woman, Hear Me Roar
A clinical psychologist, Natasha Stovall, claims the “level of hysteria these women experience shows they are triggered in a pretty extreme way.” Some of these women will project the idea they have been attacked, while others will simply lash out and aggressively attack other people.
Some so-called experts blame the feminist movement for fostering this mindset. Their long-suffering under the patriarchal system has stymied a desire to fix society, and it cannot be kept under lock and key anymore.
Now, when many hear about a Karen, they will instantly associate this characteristic to an older, white, middle class woman with a specific haircut—an asymmetrical bob. Why not? Memes have been plastered all over social media making fun of this class of people.
Temper Tantrums Galore
The outlandish behavior of these self-absorbed, entitled women is disturbing in polite society. There are many examples, but in the interest of brevity, we will only share a few:
|
Amy Cooper called the cops in 2020 after a bird-watcher asked her to put her dog on a leash in New York’s Central Park. As he recorded video on his phone she told the dispatcher, “there’s an African-American man threatening my life.”
In Montclair, New Jersey, neighbors called the police demanding police intervene with a couple who were building a patio in their backyard without a permit.
|
During the scamdemic, videos went viral online with women behaving badly in social settings. As you peruse these items, perhaps you will recall the temper tantrums you’ve experienced with toddlers in the past.
|
In California, a gardener asked a woman to step back because she wasn’t wearing a mask. She immediately demanded to see his “papers” while using a derogatory term.”
In Hillsboro, Oregon a woman sat on the floor inside a Costco after declining to wear a mask, demanding to see the manager. A polite staff member asked if she would prefer a chair.
In Torrance, California police investigated three separate incidents involving a woman yelling racist, anti-Asian sentiments.
|
This lack of decorum is not limited to America. Recently, duck hunters in Canada posted a video online of a woman screeching profanity at them. Mind you, these men had shotguns, but used humor to defuse the situation. At one point, she demanded they stop shooting live animals. This earned the epic rebuttal of, “Ma’am, these birds identify as dead.”
Entitlement Culture
Many in society today feel they deserve to have things given to them. These perceived rights, needs, and wants exemplify this entitlement culture. Sadly, this mindset has exorcised itself from any biblical teaching.
If there was a biblical mindset firmly in place today, the principle of reaping and sowing, and the value of hard work would drown out this behavior. In 2 Thessalonians 3:10-12:
|
“For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies. Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.”
|
Likewise, the Bible teaches love of God and others. In Mark 12:30-31 we read:
|
“And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.”
|
As Christians, we avoid selfishness and refuse to chase sinful pleasures. Moreover, there is understanding that Jesus gave up His own life that we may have eternal life. In Romans 5: 8-9 we read:
|
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.”
|
While the actions of these Karen’s is reprehensible, they are not without hope. These are teachable moments wherein lessons on grace and humility could prevent future outbursts.
Recognize behaviors of entitlement, selfishness, and unwarranted outrage are calling cards of much deeper issues. These incidents involving women who have inserted themselves into situations not of their concern could be easily avoided.
Obviously, there will be some situations were legitimate complaints should be raised. Resorting to extremes will resolve nothing. Instead, use well-reasoned arguments and open a dialogue towards resolving the problem.
Many years ago, as an automotive machinist just getting into the business, a wise, grizzled old shop foreman offered some sage advice to me: “Rule Number One: Be smarter than the equipment. Rule Number Two: There are no problems, only solutions.” It’s time to grow up and handle business in the proper fashion.
For the innocent Karen’s out there, you don’t deserved this categorization. Let us all strive to live a more biblical life, presenting a lifestyle and demeanor worthy of everlasting life.
