Worshiping at the Altar of Me

“Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god: their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips.”

Psalms 16:4

“Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”

Exodus 20:3

Today’s society is rife with self-adoration. How else could one explain the preponderance of social media posts which include “selfies.” Many have become self-absorbed to such an extent that it borders on idolization.

The Webster dictionary defines idolatry as: “the worship of idols or excessive devotion to, or reverence for some person or thing.” With the decline in the number of professing Christians, as well as the dwindling number of parishioners in the church, it is quite evident that “Me” has become more important than Him.

This is not a new issue. Man has long believed he knows better. The book of Hosea teaches how Israel disregarded God’s commands and, instead, adapted their religion towards that of the pagans around them.

From the late 1970s and through the 1980s the culture of narcissism exploded. Those who came of age during this time were dubbed the “Me Generation.” So-called self help books were prevalent on bookshelves, as Americans sought to “find themselves.” Self-fulfillment was deemed more important than social responsibility.

The off-spring of this generation—known as Millennials—has now been dubbed the “Me Me Me Generation.” Long gone were the days of earning your keep, and taking pride in a job well done. Instead, this was replaced by participation trophies resulting in an even more self-absorbed populace.

From left to right: Elon Musk atop his gigafactory; Mark Zuckerberg promotes self and his Metaverse; Insensitive women in front of a gas explosion; Nancy Pelosi and the liberal women of the Supreme Court; and lives in jeopardy to get the picture.

This generation deems themselves worthy of promotions every two years, whether their job performance has been exemplary or not. In a 2007 survey, four times as many of this generation would rather be a personal assistant to a famous person as be a Senator or the CEO of a major corporation. The National Study of Youth and Religion found sixty percent of Millennials would be able to “feel what’s right” in a moral situation.

This mindset coincides with the number of “influencers” chasing popularity and fame on social media. It is the proverbial phrase encapsulated: “The blind are leading the blind.”

Moreover, during this era, Christendom was infiltrated with New Age doctrines. The liberal takeover of the church was hard at work to remove stringent biblical doctrines. Pulpits across this nation were populated by lukewarm leaders who were more interested in money and community standing than they were in the salvation of their members.

As it was with Israel, so it has become with America. This nation has replaced God with an idol of their choosing. No longer are households bastions of biblical living. Many, instead, choose to believe they can manipulate God into ceding His power for their own worldy agenda.

In other words, God has become a servant of agendas rather than us being His servants. This most certainly will not end well for many. What has been lost is a sense of worthiness to our Lord and Saviour. In 1 John 2: 15-17 we read:

“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof:”

The Apostle Paul, ever vigilant in his teachings, warned those who chose carnal over spiritual pleasure. In 1 Corinthians 10: 5-6 we read:

“But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness. Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.”

Paul, also, in Romans 1:21-22 teaches:

“Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools...”

Those who blindly believe that America has been blessed by God and that nothing bad will happen to us are suffering from a grand delusion. When the elite give the marching orders to their minions, even lukewarm, so-called Christians will be rounded up. As these concentration camps—more than likely to be labeled as “Re-education Centers”—are populated, reality will most certainly arrive.

Those who truly are born again in the blood of Christ know to be prepared. The persecution will be forthcoming, because those who have chosen to live carnally will not be pleased when rebuked.

True Christians will follow His Word, and be content. Paul spoke of this in 1 Timothy 6:6-8:

“But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.”

Unfortunately, there are many who will continue to chase material pleasure and instant gratification. There are many people who say they want to go to heaven, just not right now. They are living their best life and don’t want to change.

Paul taught that the “love of money is the root of all evil” in his letter to Timothy. This gathering of stuff is paramount to their alleged happiness. Sadly, they have ignored the teaching of Jesus in Matthew 6:24: “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”

Caring for one’s family does not entail coveting filthy lucre. Those who have a roof over their heads, food to eat, clothes to wear, and the love of Jesus in their hearts are a contented group.

Parents who love their children will chasten them. They instruct them on how to live a biblical life. Certainly the enticement to be like the others will be strong, but with the solid foundation of Jesus Christ it can be overcome. In Hebrews 12:9-14, Paul wrote:

“Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby… Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord”

America may have been blessed, but it has turned it’s back on our Lord. The spiritual degradation has been rapid and thorough. It’s okay to still love this country, but it should never be placed above Jesus. The day of judgment is drawing nigh. Be ever vigilant in your journey and continue witnessing about His love for all.

“If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another” (Galatians 5:25-26)
