Big Brother Is
Invading Your Home: George
Orwell’s classic, 1984, Big Brother is omnipresent. The protagonist, Winston Smith, buys
a diary and hides in an alcove at his home to write thoughts that are critical of Big Brother. He must
do this because there is a telescreen in his room that watches his every move. Today, homes have smart
televisions that are recording audio and video of its owners, Amazon’s Alexa—a virtual
assistant—has constant audio-pickup, enabling to record every conversation had within earshot.
Have we willingly invited Big Brother into our homes with full access to our lives? Will we be subjugated
to the wishes of the Party? How much longer do we have before we no longer control any facet of our
lives?
